Rataopisto implemented a virtual fiel training on Safetycon360 learning environment on behalf of the Finnish Transport Agency (Väylävirasto). The aim of the project was to create an alternative way of implementing a field training to familiarise with the railway environment. Previously, the field day had always been implemented in an instructor-led way, where the group being trained was led locally to a field visit, where the environment was presented as far as possible. However, the seasons and the differences in localities posed challenges and caused great variations in the content of the field day, which put the students in an unequal position.
From the outset of the project, the benefits of a virtual learning environment were identified as providing streamlined training, saving time and allowing safe and meaningful access to the high-risk environment at different times of the year. In addition, the virtual content combined the specificities of different locations and regions and diversified the content of the field day. The virtual learning environment allows a large number of students to explore the railway environment and its equipment in a non-transitory, environmentally friendly way and at their own pace. Another concrete advantage is that the virtual environment can be easily re-entered if necessary.
